Cosaco XI Laid to Rest
On Monday, May 7, Grand Prix competitor and HGF breeding stallion Cosaco XI was humanely euthanized due to a progressively worsening lameness condition. Cosaco XI was a 1996 PRE stallion bred in Antequerra, Spain by the Dehesa de Yeguas breeding farm. He was trained to Grand Prix by Daniel Martin Dockx and competed at that level primarily by Pati Pierucci, with national and international scores ranging from 63-67%. Cosaco had an exceptional ability for piaffe and passage and a trot tour known for expression and elevation. At only 15.3 and classic in type, Cosaco was often overlooked in the warm-up, but in the ring he filled the arena with his presence and had many fans. He worked hard for all of his riders, and was a proud representative of his breed. Cosaco spent the last three years in retirement on the green fields of Fruitport, Michigan, breeding to HGF mares. Cosaco has produced a number of exceptional offspring including: Condesa HGF and Cocinero HGF, owned by Red Raven Farm Bibiana HGF owned by Richard and Melanie James of Christchurch, New Zealand Cocota HGF owned by Maria Lithander Mariposa HGF owned by Janne Rumbaugh CanCan HGF owned by Rhianna Pankhurst Califa HGF, owned by HGF Conquero HGF, owned by HGF and trained in Fuengirola, Spain, by Daniel Martin Dockx Cosaco HGF, born on May 10 Cochise HGF, owned by Isabel A Ferreira Gould R.I.P. Hampton Green Farm 2012 Year In Review
Its been more years than we can count that we’ve been doing the annual Year in Review at HGF—but this one, hands down, tops them all. HGF was founded with a purpose—to promote the breeding, training and development of one breed, the PRE horse, for one sport, dressage. Our claim from the first was that a well-bred, well-trained PRE could compete among the best warmbloods in the world. This year we proved it beyond question. HGF’s Grandioso, as a green Grand Prix horse, finished 29th out of 50 at the London Olympic Games amongst, by all accounts, the best field of dressage horses in history. The past twelve months following his progress were some of the most exciting in our equestrian lives, and to be there in London was an experience that we still find hard to put into words. There is simply nothing left to prove, and we continue to thank our rider, Daniel Martin Dockx, the Spanish Federation and Jan Bemelmans for their faith in our horse and their support all along the way. In 2012, we also had success with our other horses here at home and in Spain. Encanto began his first full year at Grand Prix and quickly achieved his own qualifying scores for London, although with the emphasis on Grandioso we did not compete him as much as we plan to this coming year. Vaquero HGF finished 2012 as the top-ranked Five Year Old PRE in Spain, not an easy task considering the quality of the young horses in the National Young Horse Championships in Zaragoza in October. Mica Mabragana brought Cuatrero back to the show ring after several years without a trainer following Courtney King-Dye’s accident. Mica and Cuatrero competed during the winter season at the international small tour levels at the Global Dressage Festival in Wellington. Also in 2012, we said good-bye to our first generation of competitors. Beautiful Idilio II was retired, and has been enjoying his relaxing schedule, long days of turn-out and light work with young rider Rachel Chowanec. Cosaco IX passed away last spring in Michigan, but left us many top quality sons as his legacy. Camaron remains at HGF as a breeding stallion and a mount for the owner, and also appreciates a lighter riding routine without the stress of competition. This past summer was a busy one for HGF in Fruitport where we hosted a series of events for local charities and enjoyed the musical routines of our working students and various local riders. Our work with Dressage4Kids continued with a second Emerging Dressage Athlete Clinic and Lendon Youth Dressage Festival in July. This year Endel Ots flew in to speak to the youth riders and give his advice and experiences as a young man making his way up in the equestrian world. Our breeding program, managed by Sandy Talbot, produced 5 foals in 2012 and saw 9 mares in foal for 2013. Our young horses continue to attract top professional riders who will be coming out on their own HGF-bred PREs in a few years. Throughout the country, HGF-bred PREs have been making a name for their owners and riders, and we had 5 Team 70 riders again this year. Looking forward, we have much work to do in 2013. Lendon Gray’s Winter Intensive Training program starts this month at HGF in Wellington. The WIT riders, all 21 and younger, have just arrived last week with much excitement for their winter in Florida. HGF is also a sponsor of the new Florida Youth Championship at Global Dressage Festival, and everyone is excited about the young talent that is coming out for this season. Our own sponsored youth riders are busy getting their horses ready to show. This year, Kerrigan Gluch will be showing Cuatrero at the FEI Junior level with sites on the National Championships at Gladstone and the North American Championships. Idolo Americano has returned from 2 years of finishing school in Spain and has just begun his new relationship with Rachel Chowanec as a U25 prospect for this top-ranked young rider. Bolero CXLVIII has returned to HGF and is currently in training with Nicholas Fyffe, Robert Dover’s rider for Fiero HGF. And Dani Martin will be coming to Florida this spring to look at Baroco HGF, (Bolero x Escapada) a four year old future prospect for Spain. And later this year we will start the run-up to the European Championships in Denmark…the next challenge in Grandioso’s international career. We thank all of our clients and friends for their support and well-wishes this year. Now is the time to look forward. Young horses grow up, improve, get stronger, get smarter, develop abilities for collection and produce movement that we could only imagine to be possible. This is our wish for all of you for 2013!
HGF Offers COSACO XI for Outside Breedings
After many years of turning down requests for stallion services, we are pleased to announce that we will now offer breedings to Cosaco XI beginning this spring. Cosaco was regretfully retired this year from all dressage competition, and will now begin his new role of professional breeding stallion.Cosaco XI is an imported 16 hand 1996 grey stallion, approved for breeding by the Cria Caballar in Spain. Cosaco had a brief but notable career as one of the first PRE stallions to compete at Grand Prix in the United States. In 2006, he was USDF All Breeds Horse of the Year at the Grand Prix level with a median score of over 65%. He is classic in type, with special aptitude for piaffe and passage--receiving a 10 for piaffe his first year at Grand Prix. He has a gentle, affectionate personality, a moderate temperament under saddle, and can be handled by an amateur or child. He knows the difference between the schooling and show rings, and enjoys rising to the occasion of competition. (His scores and awards are listed on his webpage under Stallions.)He is a favorite among dressage spectators and photographers, who have used his image on websites, articles, numerous publications and advertisements. Cosaco’s offspring are exceptional, in both conformation and movement. There are a number of them on the ground at HGF, and all who have been x-rayed for pre-purchase have shown clean radiographs. This is the first time that Hampton Green Farm has offered one of its performance stallions for outside breedings, and HGF stands by the quality of the stallion and his ability to improve dressage performance potential in any breed.Fee: $2500.00Contact: hamptongreenfarm@aol.com; 231-865-6000
Spring News
April and May are traditionally quiet months at HGF in Wellington as the horses wind down from their show season in Florida and the riders take a breather. In April, Ana Gilmour attended her last two weekend seminars as she prepares for her USDF Trainers Certification exam this summer. Maria is experimenting with some play piaffe and passage exercises with the three younger horses, with help on the ground from Juan Matute. We plan to do one more smaller show in Florida before the horses ship up to Michigan on the 20th.As the weather warms up for Spring in Fruitport, our attention turns to our mares and babies. In April, HGF Michigan was the site for PRE Studbook Revision for 11 horses from around the area--five from HGF--- and all passed the keen evaluation of ANCCE vet Ana Gragera. All the young horses are now turned out round the clock and are enjoying the warmer temperatures by rough-housing with their pasture mates and even jumping the occasional fence. Our summer staff is getting ready to work with our large group of two to four year olds who will either begin or continue their education in manners and equitation. We are expecting a good group of babies this year from sires Bolero and Cosaco. The mares are in good health and we should have offspring on the ground in June. Our wonderful vets from West Michigan Veterinary Service pride themselves on 100% accuracy in ultrasound gender prediction--and they have never been wrong at HGF. This year we are expecting one of our largest crops of boys, including a number of bays (castanos) with the most desirable performance bloodlines out of Spain and at HGF--Albero II (Grandioso/Adelante/Cuatrero), Remache (Camaron), and Utrerano (Bolero). Our grays will feature the champion dressage bloodlines of both Cosaco and Idilio, and we expect males and females. Finally, HGF is happy to support and promote the PRE Expo at the end of May in City of Industry, California. We plan to attend this event, hosted by USPRE, which will bring together the largest group of PRE breeders and stock in the country. For more information, see http://www.feriadelcaballoespanol.com/. Upcoming May dates: May 15-17 Grandioso and Courtney at Lamplight CDI in St. Charles, IL May 16-17 May Dressage in Wellington May 21 Stallions arrive in Michigan May 29-31 PRE Expo Check back to stay updated on all our news and activities. Introducing Encanto!
Earlier this month, HGF and Spanish rider Daniel Martin Dockx introduced HGF-bred Encanto XI to dressage competition in Estepona, Spain. Encanto is a 2002 son of Evento (1996 Olympic Spanish Team horse) and HGF's Cantora XVI. This colt showed promise at a young age and a partnership was formed between Daniel Martin and HGF to campaign Encanto in Spain. The horse was started under saddle in Wellington by Gary Smith and then sent to Malaga, Spain in 2007 to be trained by Daniel, who had previously owned and trained HGF's Cosaco to Grand Prix. Their first-ever outing was a large national dressage show (CDN3) near Marbella, and they did a single Prix St. George class. Of 25 horses, the pair finished third with a 64.7 on the heels of the ANCCE-sponsored entry. A super debut and a promising future! Congratulations Dani and Encanto! We will continue to report here on their progress.
In Memoriam Cantora XVI, 1995-2010
Hampton Green Farm sadly announces the passing of one of our dearest foundation mares, Cantora XVI. A sudden and catastrophic colic claimed her life on Saturday morning. Cantora is the dam of Encanto XI (Evento) and Conquero HGF (Cosaco XI), Luz de Luna HGF (Idilio II), and also Ibiza (Galan XVI), who is the dam of Martin Schaudt's Genio HGF (Grandioso III) and Robert Dover's Fiero HGF (Grandioso III). Cantora was integral to our early breeding program and she lives on through her children.
