Santiago HGF Named Stallion of the Year in the United States
Our homebred stallion Santiago HGF (2021) has been officially recognized as one of the most outstanding PRE stallions in the country, earning the prestigious titles from USPRE ( The United States P.R.E Association) 2025 USPRE Stallion of the Year 2025 USPRE Functionality Champion of the Year Bred in the United States, Santiago HGF is by Grandioso III out of Graciosa FSR (by Joyero XXIV), combining the renowned Marín García and Escalera bloodlines; two pillars of functionality, type, and performance. Presented by Diego González, Santiago HGF was named Stallion of the Show at Fiesta Ocala 2025. Under saddle with Cristina Durán, he also secured the overall Functionality title with an impressive score of 20.373. For Hampton Green Farm, receiving this award from USPRE is the result of years of dedicatio; carefully selecting the best bloodlines and continuously striving for excellence. Recognition like this motivates us to keep moving forward in the same direction, supporting the promotion and development of the PRE horse in the United States. Santiago HGF represents the perfect combination of quality, athleticism and beauty.
TEAM PRE Guidelines for Verden Announced
ANCCE and USPRE released the qualification guidelines for riders aiming to compete at the WBFSH World Championships for Young Horses in Verden 2026. American riders with PRE horses have two possible pathways: joining the Spanish ANCCE team through international CDI results and the Segovia selection event, or qualifying through the U.S. system via USEF ranking lists and qualifying competitions. A. Spanish ANCCE Team Qualification (via RFHE) Horses must first obtain the RFHE required minimum FEI scores of 75% for 5 and 6 year olds, and 70% for 7 years old, at TWO international CDIs in their home countries. Horses must then compete at the CDI in Segovia in June with all other prospects, where the final team selection will take place. From that point, horse and rider are considered part of the Spanish team and are required to follow all schedules and regulations as the other representatives of Spain. Full requirements posted here: https://www.ancce.es/concursos/doma-clasica/caballos-jovenes B. US ANCCE Team Qualification (via USEF) Athlete/Horse combinations must obtain the minimum requirements as outlined in the Selection Procedures posted on the USEF website (see link below) for consideration to be selected to represent the U.S. For U.S. qualifications, 5- and 6-year-old combinations must earn a minimum overall average of 8.2 on their respective USEF FEI World Breeding Championship ranking list. In addition, the Athlete/ Horse combinations must compete in the Preliminary and Final tests in combination at a minimum of two CDIYH or USEF Qualifying Competitions in USEF Qualifying Classes. Seven-Year-Old combinations must earn a minimum overall average of 77.500% on the USEF FEI World Breeding Championship Seven-Year-old ranking list. In addition, the Athlete/Horse combinations must compete in the Preliminary and Final tests in combination at a minimum of two CDI-YH or USEF Qualifying Competitions in USEF Qualifying Classes. Athlete/Horse combinations must apply to USEF for consideration to be selected to represent the U.S. The quota distribution for each age category for the U.S. is two (2) per division. U.S. bred horses (defined as a horse foaled in the United States) will take priority if MERs are met. Applicants are subject to the requirements set forth in the complete USEF Selection Procedures which are posted on the USEF website here: https://www.usef.org/forms-pubs/jdcLB5pi8NY/2025-fei-world-breeding-championships Source USPRE/ANCCE LINK : https://usprea.com/en/news/qualifications-for-participation-in-the-wbfsh-world-championship-of-young-horses-for-american-riders-of-pre-horses
Week 3 in Wellington means USPRE WEEK
The Hampton Green Farm Horses continue to represent the PRE breed with excellence. On Thursday's 4* Grand Prix, Kerrigan scored a respectable 67.152 in a class where the majority of the class were scored within 1.8% points. On Friday Under the Lights, she took the stage with Grandioso’s former Kur “La Mancha” melodies echoed in the Grand Arena and Kerrigan delighted the spectators, who roared into applause at the conclusion. The pair was all smiles after scoring a personal best of 74.570%, ending up with the 6th position overall. One of the judges awarded over 77%....with improvements always to be made, the future looks very bright. Justine Boyer made her comeback in Wellington at the international Junior level. Along with Campanero HGF they came home with two blue ribbons and a new Personal Best too. We are so excited for this young pair! This truly could not have happened without such an incredible team. A huge thank you to Maria Lithander for always guiding our riders to the right direction, and special thanks to Sophia for her exhibition ride for USPRE to kick-off the Grand Prix on Thursday One of the big Highlights of Last Week is that Sophia Schults received the Horse And Rider of the Year Award from USPRE. Dr. Jane Bistline, president of USPRE handed the trophy to Sophia. This award is a big recognition for her results last summer with Conocido HGF: Gold and Silver medals at the North American Youth Championships 2022
Grandioso in Wellington: The American Win
When you climb the Tower Giralda, the 340 foot Moorish minaret that is the symbol for the city of Sevilla, you learn a valuable life lesson. That is, that the views on the way up are far better, more rich with detail and lovelier, than the view from the top. Last week, during the CDI-W at the Global Dressage Festival sponsored by USPRE, Daniel Martin Dockx and Grandioso took second in a huge Grand Prix class and then went on to win the Grand Prix Special-- the first Grand Prix victory in America for a PRE horse in an international competition. This past weekend was more than a milestone for us at HGF. It wasn't our biggest show or our biggest win, but it was the fulfillment of a dream--to bring Grandioso back to the US and continue his successful competition career here for the benefit of the American dressage audience. The road with this horse has been long and winding, and like the walk up the stairs of the tower, filled with previews of success as well as long sections of dark, bricked walls. Some memories of the career of Grandioso are: --Discovering him in Spain at the Yeguada Marin Garcia as an unstarted four year old, with Pati and Peter Pierucci. --Inexplicable low scores and puzzled comments by judges at the national levels. --A placing of dead last in a Stallion Under Saddle class of 20 horses, at Dressage at Devon Breed Show, from a respected CA dressage judge. --Martin Schaudt's first ride and our first glimpse of the real potential of the horse. --Kathy Connelly's admonition not to sell him when he was first designated as a sale horse. --Robert Dover's early prediction "This horse could ride for any team!" --Courtney King Dye's first ride. --The first Freestyle, and the first international 74%. --USEF Inter 1 National Championships, finishing Fifth. --The darkest 10 months... --The audition in Wellington with Daniel Martin and Jan Bemelmans. --The tearful good-bye in Jan. 2011, with Courtney King-Dye and Jason. --10 Centerlines in Spain. --4th in Salzburg, Champion of Spain, first 70 at Aachen, London, Treffen, Herning, Champion of Spain again, Bronze in Aachen, Normandy and now Wellington... Grandioso is now 16, and we don't take for granted his continued soundness and willingness to work at the level he is competing. Coming back to Florida is one of the last few goals we had for him. We waited until he had nothing more to prove, but this horse seems to want to keep proving things--not least of all that breed, type and size are irrelevant in this sport. Last weekend's win was his gift to us who have labored so long to see this day. Next weekend's 5* is about fun and pageantry and being a part of it all-- a showcase of the best horses in all of North America plus many top horses from overseas. We are honored to have been invited and to take part in this wonderful event--which will be a brilliant spectacle for the general community, but for us, a hometown celebration of Grandioso's fairy-tale career.
News from Wellington and Spain, February 2014
The Wellington show season is in full swing. Lendon Gray and her Winter Intensive Training students (WITees as they are now known) are hard at work in the HGF arenas or around the barns. Working students Rachel Chowanec and Kerrigan Gluch divide their time between the barn chores for HGF horses, WIT lectures and teaching, training with Maria Lithander, giving lessons, helping out at the USPRE exhibition, competing at Global and, not least, school work! Here is a quick update on what’s been happening so far: USPRE Week: A great success again this year, bringing out more than 600 people for the USPRE Party and exhibition, and hosting a number of events for members and friends. Special performances by Medieval Times and El Portal Andaluz made the evening shine! USEF/USDF Pipeline Clinic: Rachel Chowanec and Embrujado (owned by Lendon Gray) were invited to participate in the first ever USEF/USDF Pipeline Clinic—the brainchild of Robert Dover to bring together the top developing riders at each level to work with the USEF training staff. Rachel is currently schooling Embrujado for the U25, and found the two days of working with Robert Dover, Scott Hassler and Jeremy Steinberg very helpful. She hopes to begin to show at the new level later this season. Florida International Youth Dressage Championhips: This new Championship, started in 2013, brought out 17 riders this year in four divisions with very respectable results. WITee Katrina Sadis (who trains also with HGF blogger Andrea Landis) won the Pony Division on Poldy, a D4K horse. HGF –sponsored Kerrigan Gluch took 3rd place in the Junior Division with Lentisco XVIII. The Championship was held in the CDI classes and all tests were ridden in the International Arena at Global Dressage. Grandioso Update: Grandioso and Dani are preparing for the spring shows, with hopes to attain a place on the Spanish Team for Normandy. This month, a health emergency in Dani’s family prevented them from going to Vidauban as planned, and so they will look to do a local national show in March as warm-up before beginning to compete outside of Spain in April. We will keep you posted on their schedule. Dani reports that all the HGF horses in his care are progressing well in their training.
HGF-bred Young Horses Compete in Wellington 2012
Two HGF-bred young horses were actively competed in Wellington this past season, and both with stand-out results. Mary Magee's Infanta HGF (Idilio x Candela), ridden by Mica Mabragana, was a multiple First Place winner of her Training Level classes, USPRE High Point winner at the Florida Classic Dressage Show (she was also the High Point winner for the show) and the Palm Beach Derby, and Reserve Champion Training Level High Point for the Global Dressage Festival National Circuit (9 shows). Robert Dover's HGF Fiero (Grandioso x Ibiza), ridden by Nicholas Fyffe, was the USPRE High Point winner for the national show at the Nation's Cup, with a 71.6% and First Place at Training Level. He was also the overall High Point winner for that show. Fiero turns 4 in July. Congratulations to riders and owners!

HGF at Global Dressage Florida Classic
HGF at Global Dressage Florida Classic This second CDI of the series of 5 was the official Opening for the new Global Dressage Festival. Not until the very last minute on Wednesday night were all permits issued for occupancy on the shiny new buildings and grounds. 200 horses moved in the next morning for a three day show with close to 400 rides. The international Grand Prix fielded over 30 horses from 5 countries, with several of the judges making their first visit to South Florida. Over 600 people attended a sparkling evening of freestyles and 5 additional show sponsors from the Wellington dressage community signed on to be part of what appears to be a game-changing venue and series for our sport.Wednesday evening was the USPRE kick-off party. Normally held on move-in day, this year people had to make a special trip to come out the night before the show for the event--but the response was overwhelming. The Patron's Club was set for 350 people, and there was overflow of at least another 50 outside of the tent--never before has USPRE seen so much support and enthusiasm! A line-up of promising young PREs with top riders--from established US Team riders to Lendon Gray's hand-picked Emerging Dressage Athlete (EDAP) youth riders--rode to music or to the instruction of their trainers. This year's riders were: Endel Ott, Mica Mabragana, Rachel Chowanec, Emily Copeland, Lily Zilo, Chelsea Reed, Maddy Guthrie, Sophie Hoffman and Kerrigan Gluch. Tina Konyot and Lendon Gray taught demonstration riders and gave testimonials of their experiences and endorsements of PRE Horses. The show commenced on Thursday morning, and our attention turned to our HGF riders and their horses. As is our tradition, HGF horses were beautifully ridden and received top scores in their classes--Rachel Chowanec continued to gain experience in this first year of riding the Young Riders tests, improving her marks as she and Embrujado become more experienced at what is essentially the Prix St. George level. They took first and second in the national Team and Individual tests respectively with scores of 68.28 and 67.1. 15 year old Kerrigan Gluch of Michigan traveled down to Wellington with her parents Tina and Brent to represent the EDAP riders in the USPRE exhibit, and to do her first Wellington show as a bonus. Having only ridden Camaron three times in the EDAP clinic in December, Kerrigan proved what her trainer Laurie Moore says are her particular strengths--showmanship and test-riding! They showed third level all weekend and received three of Camaron's best scores at this level: 67.69, 67.94 and 68.415, just edging out Rachel for the Youth Rider High Point Award for USPRE.Mica Mabragana is continuing to live up to her press with exceptionally high marks on the young mare Infanta HGF (Candela x Idilio). Owner Mary Magee of Chicago was on hand to see the pair as they easily topped their Training Level classes with scores of 71.42, 72.00, and 77.85! The judges praised the mare's three excellent gaits and made special mention of the harmony between horse and rider (for which they received a 9 in collective marks from one judge). Mica and Infanta's score of 77.85 was not only the Open High Point score for USPRE, but was the High Score for the entire Florida Dressage Classic show--a fitting conclusion to a weekend sponsored by the United States PRE Association!

What is a PRE?
You may have seen the recent correspondence between USPRE and the Pre Mundial registry that has revisited the controversy over that registry's use of the PRE name for their horses. Although Hampton Green Farm and USPRE are two separate entities, one a privately owned business and the other a public non-profit, the issues that are being addressed by USPRE are relevant if not vital to all PRE Breeders and owners in the United States, HGF and its clients included. The PRE Studbook (sometimes referred to as LGANCCE), owned by the Spanish Government and managed by the breeders' association ANCCE, is virtually unique among European Sport Horse studbooks in that it allows all PREs born outside of Spain who follow the protocol to be registered in the same studbook as horses born in Spain. Other studbooks, such as the warmblood studbooks in Germany, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, and most others, are closed to breeders outside of their countries. These studbooks allow American breeders to form their own registries, and to include horses in their own (American) registries under the European breed name (ie, American Hannoverian, KWPN North America, American Friesian, North American Danish Warmblood Association, etc.) as long as they work closely under the auspices of the original European studbook authority. But an American Hannoverian is not registered in the same studbook as a German Hannoverian. (And no American registry for a European breed currently operates without the cooperation of the parent studbook--except for Pre Mundial.) Under current provisions, the PRE Horses Breeders in the United States have the privilege of having their horses registered in the parent Studbook in Spain, alongside all PREs born and registered there. To protect this right, American PREs must follow the same protocols as the PREs in Spain, submit the same paperwork, be presented for inspection by Spanish officials, and owners/breeders must be registered as such in Spain. PRE horses breeders in the United States accept the additional expense, effort and time this process brings, because they understand the value of their Spanish papers, and their clients know the value of the Spanish Carta, of having a horse that is registered in the parent Spanish studbook which is recognized and protected by the European Union. In the opinion of the government of Spain who owns the PRE Studbook, and ANCCE who manages the Studbook, and USPRE who represents the Spanish Studbook in America, the breed name PRE (Pura Raza Espanola or translated Pure Spanish Horse) belongs only to horses who are registered in the parent Studbook. Pre Mundial, on the other hand, is an American registry based in New Mexico that started three years ago and began to register new horses as PREs, without permission by any Spanish authority. Repeated calls by the government of Spain to cease and desist have gone unheeded by Pre Mundial, whose registry is only recognized by the United States, and who can only paper horses in the United States. Unlike their name, they neither represent the PRE Horse nor the entire world. Pre Mundial has admitted publicly that they are an American registry which can only operate in the United States, that they have no permission from Spain to use the PRE name, and that they have chosen to use the PRE name of their own volition and by their own definition--in other words, an unauthorized imitation which endangers the quality and value of the good name of the original. USPRE has called on Pre Mundial to take the high road and stop pirating the name of the PRE Horse for their own benefit. USPRE has asked Pre Mundial to call their horses by an American name of their choosing, but not by the name of a studbook whom they do not represent. Confusion among breeders and new owners has already occurred with USPRE being put in the uncomfortable position of having to inform Pre Mundial owners who contact them that they have a horse that is not recognized in Spain. USPRE acknowledges that the American PRE Breeders have a unique privilege to register their horses in the parent Studbook, and also the responsibility to protect that right and the name of the breed that represents the quality, heritage and value of the PRE Horse. Engaging in a battle of words with Pre Mundial is not something that USPRE desires to do, or that it looks forward to. USPRE would like nothing more than to see Pre Mundial establish their own honestly-named registry and operate with success and collaboration with the other Iberian-based registries and associations here in the United States. However, as part of its role in representing the US Breeders of PREs, USPRE has no choice but to stand up and point out a counterfeit when they see it. A Pre Mundial horse may be a beautiful animal, may carry the kind and noble disposition of its ancestors, may excel in sport, and may bring a high price, but a Pre Mundial horse is not a PRE Horse, and can never be one unless it is registered in the PRE Studbook in Spain. SICAB REPORT 2010
Another year, another SICAB--another missed Thanksgiving with no regrets. SICAB--the annual PRE convention and show held in November in Sevilla--was another highly predictable and highly enjoyable event. It's a breed show like none other--with the best examples of the PRE horse gathered together for a final year-end competition--in-hand, under saddle in a number of disciplines, and of course, in the hearts of the hundreds of thousands of attendees. This year, a number of USPRE Directors and officials were on hand, and several important meetings were held throughout the week in reference to better services for the PRE Breeders in the US, and for continued promotion of the PRE horse within the dressage community in the States. We took advantage of the days together to spend time with our friends at ANCCE, particularly Revision Veterinarian Jaime Chapa, Manolo Ridriguez and Pedro Pons, ACPRE New Zealand Director Melanie James and her husband Richard who are also owners of HGF horses, Michele Widner, her family and rider Juan Perez, Rafael Ortiz, Arancha and Perico from the LG office, and more. We spent a day visiting Yeguada Marin Garcia--the birthplace of Grandioso, Cuatrero, Adelante, and many other HGF horses. We shared a wonderful meal with Javier Marin Fidalgo and his wife Margareta before traveling on to the Malaga region to see Daniel Martin and the HGF stallions newly stabled at his Hipica Dana training facility in Fuengirola. We were pleased to see all of the horses schooled and settled into this new stage in their training. Encanto continues to be prepared for a Grand Prix debut at some point in 2011, and we are hopeful that the others will be ready for their next levels sometime soon as well. On Monday, we return back to the States and begin our focus on 2011 and the Wellington Season. It's a Pan Am year, so things could get interesting... PS--Yes, that would be a carriage crossing behind the Spanish team horses, part of the Espectaculo Performance held in honor of the visiting Infanta, the daughter of the King of Spain.

Wellington Show Report
Maria Lithander has been quite busy with her young horses recently. She dominated the First Level at the Palm Beach Derby with all three of the younger horses--Bolero, Idolo Americano, and Adelante. Each of the horses showed that they were ready to move up, with all three horses scoring over 70 per cent. Now if we could just not have them all in the same class! We were especially proud of Idolo for his 3 scores over 72% at only his second dressage show--and of Bolero for winning the USPRE Open National Level High Point Award, and missing the High Point Award for the entire Palm Beach Derby by only .2 points! Palm Beach Dressage Derby Results First Level Test One Idolo 72.00 First Bolero 66.67 Second First Level Test Two (Judge Lilo Fore) Idolo 74.722 First Adelante 70.667 Second First Level Test Three Bolero 69.714 Second Adelante 64.00 Fourth First Level Test Four Bolero 75.5 First Idolo 75.2 Second We also want to congratulate Maria and Adelante for their win at Adelante's first ever 2nd level test, at the Wellington Classic Dressage Challenge II with a 66.3. We will be sure to update our readers on everything we've seen as soon as we return. In the meantime, for our friends in the US, have a Happy Thanksgiving and a wonderful weekend with family and friends!HGF Staff
Preparing for Devon
Following several busy weeks of visitors at HGF--including Scott Hassler, Courtney King-Dye, Lendon Gray, Pam Nelson and Heidi Gaian, our focus is now on preparing for the trip to Pennsylvania and our participation in the Devon Breed Show. HGF is proud to be sponsoring again this year the Dressage with the Experts program in the Performance Division, and also to be supporting the competitors in the USPRE Dressage High Point Challenge as well as the USPRE Individual Breed Class. Dressage at Devon (September 22-27) is a highlight of the year, and allows us to showcase the products of our breeding program. In 2007, HGF's Idolo Americano was the recipient of the Born in the USA Breeder's Award for Stallions, a first for a PRE horse. This year, we will be bringing a group of 3 year olds, including 2 young stallions owned by German Olympian Martin Schaudt--a stop on their way to their new home in Germany--as well as our own Decoroso HGF, Champion Young Horse and Reserve Grand Champion at Traverse City. Our horses will be presented in hand by Tom Reed. If you plan to attend Dressage at Devon this year, stop by to see us in the barns and take a look at this year's representatives of the HGF breeding program, and join us as we showcase the PRE horse among the top dressage breeding stock in the United States!
