Grandioso Takes the Grand Prix and Special in Madrid

Grandioso and Dani Martin returned to the showring to win both the Grand Prix and the Grand Prix Special at the Dressage Festival of Madrid CDI3*. With a score of 71.9, they topped a class of 25 pairs in the Grand Prix, followed by the win in the Special with 72.35. Daniel Martin Dockx and Oxido Place Fourth in the Spanish Young Horse Championships

At the end of September in Toledo, Spain, HGF's Oxido and Daniel Martin Dockx competed in the Spanish National Young Horse Championships in the 7-9 Years Category, what is known in the US as the Developing Horse Prix St. George. The pair placed Third in the First Qualifier, Fourth in the PSG, and Third again in the Kur, with a final placing of Fourth overall. Additionally, they were Copa ANCCE Champions, highest placed PRE in the 7-9 years category where there were 22 horses, the top 3 positions filled by warmbloods. Oxido is a new horse for Hampton Green Farm, purchased in March 2014. The 2006 gray stallion is by Iberis (Camacho Benitez) and was bred by the Hermanos Mojarro Zamora studfarm. Oxido is designated Young Recommended Breeding Stock for Dressage Performance by the parent studbook, ANCCE, and with former rider Antonio Blanco Prieto was selected for the 2013 ANCCE Team, after obtaining the highest marks for a 6 Year Old in the PSJC series in 2012.

March 2-4, Weekend Wrap-Up

Mica Mabragana took both the CDI and National Level High Point Awards for USPRE at last weekend's Palm Beach Derby in Loxahatchee, FL, with Cuatrero at the International Prix St. George--64.8%--and Infanta HGF (owned by Mary Magee of Chicago) with 67.7% at First Level. Cuatrero had a good first day in the international show, but appeared to go slightly irregular in the Intermediare I, with difficulties in the canter work. Will update before their next outing. Daniel Martin Dockx won the Grand Prix with Encanto at Dos Lunas in Sotogrande, Spain. This elegant facility near Marbella, owned by Mrs. Anunciada Torras, serves as a riding club for both Dressage and Polo. For the Spanish report, seewww.topiberian.com .

Spring News at HGF

The Wellington Season has officially ended, and all the horses here will have the month of May off to rest and enjoy the breezy warm days. Our young riders posted another winning season: Kerrigan Gluch won 6 of her 9 Junior classes with Cuatrero, establishing strong averages toward the Region 2 NAJYRC classification. She also placed 4th in the Florida Youth Championships with Lentisco. Rachel Chowanec and Embrujado received scores to 67.8 in both Young Riders and Prix St. George at the big shows with many firsts, and re-introduced Idolo Americano to the showring with a high score of 71.9 at Third Level. Congratulations and nice work to both young women who worked very hard this season in the barn as well as the arena. In Michigan, Sandie Talbot and her staff are getting ready for the mares to foal and the stallions to return. HGF is expecting a large group of foals this year, by stallions Cuatrero IV and Camaron IX out of our Marin Garcia brood mares along with those of our other featured performance lines. With new ANCCE Revision guidelines stipulating that all presented stock be past their 3rd birthday, all remaining 2010 stock will be presented for Revision in the fall. Spring cleaning is finally starting, and the farm is recovering from a particularly long and wet Michigan winter this year. We have a full slate of charity events planned for summer 2013, as well as lots of work for the students--horses to start, Lendon Gray clinics, the LYDF Midwest, Dressage at Waterloo and more. In Spain, Daniel Martin Dockx and Grandioso, along with other Spanish competitors, are headed next to CDI4* Treffen at the Glock Horse Performance Center in Austria, the weekend of 15-19 May. We will inform as to live coverage of this show.

Spanish National Championships and Arrival in Malaga of HGF Horses

HGF's Encanto XI was slated to be one of the top horses in the Intermediare I Championships for Spain in Toledo last month, and his performance in the Prix St. George suggested the same, a Third Place on Friday and leading PRE. This championship, however, was not to be like the last two--and rider Daniel Martin scratched Encanto just before the Intermediare I for a minor inflammation of a superficial cut on the horse's coronary band that made him slightly uneven on Saturday. Treatment by the show vet resulted in 100% soundness the following day, but the championships were forfeited. Following this weekend, Encanto will move on from the Small Tour, and will begin working toward a Grand Prix debut at the National levels sometime next year. Later in the week, four additional HGF stallions arrived safely from Michigan to the training facility of Daniel Martin in Fuengirola, just outside of Marbella. Two of the horses, Adelante (Grandioso VII) and Idolo Americano have many winnings and substantial show records at the lower levels in the United States, having been trained and shown the past two years by HGF rider Maria Lithander with scores consistently over 70% in Wellington. Adelante is a 2002 full brother to Grandioso III, Courtney King-Dye's Grand Prix prospect, and Idolo Americano (2003) is the 2007 Champion US Bred Stallion at Devon Breed Show, and 2010 USDF Regional Reserve Champion for Second Level. Both horses will be ready for Prix St. George at some point during 2011. Two 2007 colts were also sent to be trained by Daniel. Vaquero HGF is by Cuatrero IV (Marin Garcia) out of Encina (Idilio). Conquero HGF is a half-brother to Encanto XI on the dam side, and sired by Cosaco XI (Dehesa de Yeguas). HGF is happy to work in collaboration with the training program of Daniel Martin in Spain and we look forward to seeing the horses in the Spanish show rings in 2011.

Megan Levine and Rhomann are the HGF Young Horse/Young Rider Champions at the Lendon Youth Dressage Festival Midwest.

In this first year of the LYDF Midwest, several new awards were sponsored by various organizations. To encourage young riders to be trainers as well as riders, HGF chose to present it's Champion ribbon to the highest scoring pair where the horse was started by the rider. We were pleased to see that there were several pairs who fit the criteria this year, but our winner was 20 year old Megan Levine on Rhomann. Megan has an impressive record already with training young horses....Here is her story: I have known Rhomann since he was first born. I began taking lessons at Rowe stables in Okemos, MI the week he was born. He is by the stallion Rhoquest (by Art Deco) and out of a brood mare, both owned by my instructor Tracy Rowe McEwan, and I had the pleasure of watching him grow up during my time there taking lessons on my mare. The year I turned 17, I was getting ready to show my first Prix St. Georges on an appaloosa mare that I trained from the time she was green broke. Tracy needed to down sized her number of personal horses, and seeing my dedication and hard work with my other horse, she offered me first pick of her two young horses. I chose to purchase Rho from her and since he had just turned 3, we promptly got to work with him. With some help from the local cowboy we got him started and the process went very smoothly. From the beginning of his training he has had a wonderful attitude and personality with a willingness to work and to learn. As well as comfortable, forward gaits. I have done all of his training, with weekly lessons and instruction at Rowe stable. He turned 6 this May and we are working on 3rd level at home. Today at my lesson we actually did our first flying lead change. He is a sensitive horse and has been very trainable and rideable because he likes to be kept busy. The more I keep him thinking the more fun he is to ride. This trait of his has made him very enjoyable to train because he catches on to movements quickly and once he understands it, I barely have to ask him from then on to produce that movement and he will perform with out a hesitation at the slightest cue. We do still have our challenges, Rhomann is built with a high set neck, and it takes a great deal of effort on his part to maintain the reaching stretching contact desired at the lower levels of dressage. This is improving though and is something that I work very diligently in our rides to maintain. I plan to continue riding and training with Tracy Rowe McEwan and work up the levels with him, and hope to eventually compete him at Grand Prix. Like most young dressage enthusiasts this is my goal. If this is met he will be the second horse I have trained to FEI. I have brought my appaloosa mare from a out of control barrel racing reject, to schooling Grand Prix in my 7 years riding at Rowe Stables. I have loved every second of my journey with him this far and hope to have many more years with him. Congratulations Megan and Rhomann!

Courtney King-Dye Introduces Grandioso to International Competition

At the Wellington Classic Spring Challenge on Februrary 6-8, Courtney King-Dye rode HGF's Grandioso in his first international show and instantly put themselves on the map in the national rankings. The prior weekend, at the ESP Wellington Dressage Open Show, the pair did warm-up classes of Prix St. George and their first Intermediare 1, with scores above 68% in both classes. At the CDI in the Prix St. George, Grandioso's test had a few mistakes and he finished 6th in the class of 17 with a 66.2. He was more confident in the Intermediare 1 and the pair finished 2nd with a 68.2%. On Sunday, Courtney rode Grandioso to a compilation of classic Spanish orchestral pieces in his first Freestyle, and the pair won the class with over 72%, with artistic marks to 80%. Congratulations Courtney and Grandioso! National Intermediare 1 rankings have them for the moment in third place. We look forward now to the Palm Beach Derby, for Courtney and Grandioso as well as HGF's other riders and horses.

Idilio´s Turn

Many of our friends and readers have been wondering what’s been happening with our wonderful Idilio. Following a promising start at Grand Prix in 2006, Idilio’s scores have been inconsistent and often disappointing. He was last seen in the show ring in 2008 in Wellington and seemed to have disappeared since then. We are happy to now give you this update: One year ago we began a new training program with Idilio, and we removed him from the show ring to address issues that had developed in his work and performance. We had no choice but to take him out of all competition in order make certain improvements which were crucial if we wanted to continue to show him at the upper levels, and ultimately again at Grand Prix. Although we are still on the road back, we are very pleased to have made significant progress. Starting in April last year, we took 8 months to focus on only two things with Idilio—his connection issues and his overall fitness. Both Ana (in the summer) and Maria (his permanent rider) worked patiently over this time period to correct and improve his contact with the bridle through systematic exercises to strengthen his back and hind quarters and to encourage him to continue to move forward into a correct contact in front without curling or shortening his neck. Fitness and through-ness were the key goals for him and we agreed that we would take as much time as he needed. Once we were comfortable that the horse was moving correctly over the back and maintaining a happy and proper connection to the rider’s hand, we began to address the straightness and through-ness of the changes with the help of Lendon Gray. When we were comfortable with the work we were getting at home, we made the decision to bring Idilio out with his new rider at levels lower than he had been showing previously, in order to encourage him to be more relaxed in the show ring and to confirm at the show what we were getting consistently in schooling. This past weekend, Idilio did two Prix St. George tests at the White Fences show. We were pleased to see that he maintained his relaxed attitude and the improvements that had been worked on over the past year. He maintained a strong and through connection throughout the entire test, and he produced big, straight and clean single and tempi changes consistently in both tests. His scores were his highest ever at PSG—on Saturday he received a 68.6% from judge Joan Humphrey for a Fourth Place (out of 17) and on Sunday he received a 68.1% from judge Margaret Heath to tie for First Place in the class of 16. We feel that Maria and Idilio are on the right track and that our program of bringing him slowly back up through the FEI levels is the best thing for the horse. From Maria: “This year with Idilio has been an amazing experience. He has a heart of gold and a better work ethic than any horse I have ever ridden. Thanks to the patience of all involved, we have had the time to build a relationship based on trust and confidence, and really confirm every step we have taken together. The feeling I got at the show this weekend is that we have really become friends.”Many people came up to tell us how happy they were to see him back in the ring and looking so good—we appreciate all of you who commented and we can’t be happier ourselves with the stunning changes in this horse over the past year. Congratulations Maria and Idilio!

Grandioso and Courtney King-Dye Finish Fifth in USEF Dressage Festival of Champions

Nothing but rain for the Festival parade! This year's 2009 Festival of Champions at Gladstone will be remembered for the persistent bad weather and the controversial decision to cancel classes on the final day. The first day's cancellations must have been a bad omen for the weather report the rest of the weekend, and the unseasonably cold and dreary weather never seemed to let up. This, however, didn't dampen the performances of the riders in all of the championship classes, and especially the Intermediare 1 Championship which had strong leaders in the first two places and a very competitive group vying for the next few spots. Unfortunately, with the Freestyle was canceled, Grandioso and Courtney did not have a chance to repeat their strong performance from their first CDI in Wellington when they won the Freestyle with over 72%. Nevertheless, their Prix St. George and Inter 1 tests were impressive and competitive. Courtney drew the first ride of the championship and opened the class with 70.684% at the PSG on Friday. The Inter 1 on Saturday started very strong but troubles in the pirouettes brought the score down slightly to 69.789. The combination of the two scores gave the pair their closely contested ranking of Fifth Place out of 13 for the weekend. All of us at HGF are so proud of both of them for doing so well in the face of the best small tour competition in the country and we congratulate winners Katherine, Jan, and all the other riders on a great show, in spite of somewhat soggy conditions, and the excellent job they all did. It was a privilege to be counted among them!( . . . more photos to come from Gladstone when Mary Phelps returns from Aachen!)

Introducing Encanto!

Earlier this month, HGF and Spanish rider Daniel Martin Dockx introduced HGF-bred Encanto XI to dressage competition in Estepona, Spain. Encanto is a 2002 son of Evento (1996 Olympic Spanish Team horse) and HGF's Cantora XVI. This colt showed promise at a young age and a partnership was formed between Daniel Martin and HGF to campaign Encanto in Spain. The horse was started under saddle in Wellington by Gary Smith and then sent to Malaga, Spain in 2007 to be trained by Daniel, who had previously owned and trained HGF's Cosaco to Grand Prix. Their first-ever outing was a large national dressage show (CDN3) near Marbella, and they did a single Prix St. George class. Of 25 horses, the pair finished third with a 64.7 on the heels of the ANCCE-sponsored entry. A super debut and a promising future! Congratulations Dani and Encanto! We will continue to report here on their progress.

HGF's Encanto XI is Reserve National Young Horse Champion in Spain

The Spanish National Young Horse Championships were held this year in Vejer Spain during the weekend of 30 Octobert-1 November. HGF's 7-year old Encanto qualified for the 7-9 Year Old Division, which is similar to the US Developing Horse Test, a modified Prix St. George. Encanto was imported to Spain from the US in the spring of 2007 to start his training with Daniel Martin of Fuengirola. The pair's first competition together was this past July, a PSG at a National Show in Estepona. Following that, they won both the PSG and I-1 contests in Cordoba, and then were third and first at another large competition in Montenmedio. The National Young Horse Championships are their fourth competition together and they made a spectacular showing among the top young horses in Spain. Encanto was the only PRE in the competition to finish in the medals, and the 7-9 year old class contained many imported warmblood horses that had extensive training and showing outside of Spain (including, incidentally, Daddy Cool--a horse that competed at PSG/I-1 last year in the Wellington CDIs by our Southfields Road neighbor and Canadian Olympian Ashley Holzer). The weekend began with a Preliminary Qualifier test, afterwards the Young Horse Test and finally a Kur. The tests were judged by a panel of three which included international judges from Germany and the Netherlands. Dani and Encanto's scores were better each day and Dani reports that he received much encouragement from the foreign judges following the competition. The competition was won by the 9-year old Dutch horse, Tegro. Dani and Encanto's final results for the Silver Medal were:ENCANTO XI / PRE / José Daniel Martín Dockx / Hampton Green Farm / 64,944 / 66,754 / 68,583 / 302,24Encanto is by Spanish Olympic legend Evento, out of HGF's Cantora XVI. Cantora was purchased by HGF in 2001 along with her daughter Ibiza. The offspring from these bloodlines are very popular among HGF clients and are on the bottom side of several up and coming young horses including Martin Schaudt's Genio HGF, David Sonshine's Iliado and HGF's Conquero. We are happy to have the tests on video and they may be viewed at:Segundo día: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUqHoHu_tNU Tercer día: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjPHBP6KWpM Medallas: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYGSLuyf_00
