American-Bred Santiago HGF Leaves Ocala for First Euro Tour

Santiago HGF, a 2021 PRE Stallion by Grandioso III, is making the long journey from his home in Ocala to Segovia, Spain, just outside of Madrid. Santi is currently qualified in the FEI 5 Year Old division for Spain for the Selection Trials for the World Championship of Young Horses.  As a member of the World Breeding Federation of Sport Horses, ANCCE, the PRE Studbook, establishes the qualifications for their representation at the World Championships, held later in the summer in Germany. Young horses across Spain, as in other European countries, have been vying since January for the minimum scores to qualify for the team. Final selection will be made following the CDI in Segovia, June 16-18, and upon health and soundness verifications.  Hampton Green Farm rider Antonio Crespin Lopez and Santi debuted this Spring in Ocala and Terranova at the international FEI 5 Year Old level, achieving high scores over 80% at both shows, which made Santi now the second US-bred horse to ever qualify for Young Horse team selection trials in Spain--the first being Santi's half-brother Mejorano HGF (also by Grandioso III) who competed for Spain in the FEI 7 Year Old Division at Ermelo in 2018 with Jose Daniel Martin Dockx.  Santi will now compete alongside top 5 year old representatives from the most prestigious breeding farms in Spain. Santiago HGF was born in Michigan and is a son of two-time Olympic mount Grandioso. He is out of a daughter of Joyero XXIV, an Elite stallion from of the Ganaderia Francisco Santiago in Malaga. Hampton Green Farm's owner Kimberly Van Kampen named the horse in remembrance of the generosity of the mare's breeder to her during her visit to his farm.  Prior to starting his dressage career, Santi was Champion Stallion at Fiesta Ocala at Ibericon 2025, and Stallion of the Year for USPRE in 2025.

Cosaco XI Laid to Rest

On Monday, May 7, Grand Prix competitor and HGF breeding stallion Cosaco XI was humanely euthanized due to a progressively worsening lameness condition. Cosaco XI was a 1996 PRE stallion bred in Antequerra, Spain by the Dehesa de Yeguas breeding farm. He was trained to Grand Prix by Daniel Martin Dockx and competed at that level primarily by Pati Pierucci, with national and international scores ranging from 63-67%. Cosaco had an exceptional ability for piaffe and passage and a trot tour known for expression and elevation. At only 15.3 and classic in type, Cosaco was often overlooked in the warm-up, but in the ring he filled the arena with his presence and had many fans. He worked hard for all of his riders, and was a proud representative of his breed. Cosaco spent the last three years in retirement on the green fields of Fruitport, Michigan, breeding to HGF mares. Cosaco has produced a number of exceptional offspring including: Condesa HGF and Cocinero HGF, owned by Red Raven Farm Bibiana HGF owned by Richard and Melanie James of Christchurch, New Zealand Cocota HGF owned by Maria Lithander Mariposa HGF owned by Janne Rumbaugh CanCan HGF owned by Rhianna Pankhurst Califa HGF, owned by HGF Conquero HGF, owned by HGF and trained in Fuengirola, Spain, by Daniel Martin Dockx Cosaco HGF, born on May 10 Cochise HGF, owned by Isabel A Ferreira Gould R.I.P. Encanto XI and Daniel Martin are Intermediare I Champions of Andalucia

Last weekend in Almeria, Spain, HGF's Encanto and Daniel Martin Dockx were awarded Champions of Andalucia for Intermediare I. Encanto has not competed since the Sunshine Tour earlier in the year, but improved his scores at the I-I in this latest showing, finishing with a composite score of 67.55%. Daniel and Encanto are preparing for the National Championships of Spain in November. Encanto is an 8 year old PRE Stallion, branded HGF, by Evento out of the late Cantora XVI. The colt has been in Spain since 2007 in training with Daniel, and last year the pair achieved the Reserve National Championship for Developing Horses in Spain, and placed in the ribbons in the international classes at Sunshine Tour this past March. Daniel makes regular visits to HGF to train with Lendon Gray and Courtney King-Dye and to assist HGF riders. Daniel is taking over the training of Adelante and Idolo Americano later this year.

HGF's Encanto in Saumur

Last weekend, HGF's Encanto XI competed for Spain at CDIO Saumur. The 2002 PRE Stallion by Evento, bred by HGF, began his first year at the Grand Prix level at the Sunshine Tour in March and is getting scores in the mid-sixties. For both horse and rider Jose Daniel Martin Dockx, the Saumur show was the first time to compete outside of Spain. In the Grand Prix, the pair scored 62.8 and were 19th of 30 horses. They improved their marks in the Grand Prix Consolation test with 65.78 and Fourth Place of 16 horses. Their performance was noted by Eurodressage who reported: "The American owned 9-year-old Incanto is another talent from Spain He moves in a similar style to Norte and showed trot half passes with the most amazing athleticism and crossing over, reminiscent of Satchmo. However, the other movements still need more maturing, though he appears to be promising." http://www.eurodressage.com/equestrian/2011/05/03/raising-union-jack-british-festival-grand-prix-2011-cdio-saumur

Gold Coast Opener Results: the Teamwork of Ana Gilmour and Bolero

Ana Gilmour continues her successes in Wellington with great results on HGF's young stallion Bolero. At the Gold Coast Opener on January 23-25, Ana again scored over 70% with Bolero and added another big win to his show record. Ana finished competitively in all classes with both Bolero and Camaron and she is now looking forward to the Wellington Classic Spring Challenge on February 6-8. HGF Offers COSACO XI for Outside Breedings

After many years of turning down requests for stallion services, we are pleased to announce that we will now offer breedings to Cosaco XI beginning this spring. Cosaco was regretfully retired this year from all dressage competition, and will now begin his new role of professional breeding stallion.Cosaco XI is an imported 16 hand 1996 grey stallion, approved for breeding by the Cria Caballar in Spain. Cosaco had a brief but notable career as one of the first PRE stallions to compete at Grand Prix in the United States. In 2006, he was USDF All Breeds Horse of the Year at the Grand Prix level with a median score of over 65%. He is classic in type, with special aptitude for piaffe and passage--receiving a 10 for piaffe his first year at Grand Prix. He has a gentle, affectionate personality, a moderate temperament under saddle, and can be handled by an amateur or child. He knows the difference between the schooling and show rings, and enjoys rising to the occasion of competition. (His scores and awards are listed on his webpage under Stallions.)He is a favorite among dressage spectators and photographers, who have used his image on websites, articles, numerous publications and advertisements. Cosaco’s offspring are exceptional, in both conformation and movement. There are a number of them on the ground at HGF, and all who have been x-rayed for pre-purchase have shown clean radiographs. This is the first time that Hampton Green Farm has offered one of its performance stallions for outside breedings, and HGF stands by the quality of the stallion and his ability to improve dressage performance potential in any breed.Fee: $2500.00Contact: hamptongreenfarm@aol.com; 231-865-6000

HGF Friends and Family

Congratulations to Rachel Chowanec for her first rated show with Embrujado, better known as "Mouse"! Rachel took over the ride on Embrujado last fall and has been training with Lendon Gray at Gleneden Farm in New York all winter. She had quite a challenge ahead of her: Mouse was an imported PRE stallion who was traumatized during the shipment process to the US. He was subsequently gelded and ended up at HGF for retraining. He has a sweet personality and a ton of talent for dressage, but had developed a fear of trailering and going to new places. Prior attempts to take him off property caused him to be extraordinarily stressed, and so everyone assumed he would remain someone's backyard pet. Then Lendon and Rachel entered this little horse's life! Lendon took to him instantly at a clinic in Michigan and suggested that one of her exceptional Junior Riders might be able to help him. Rachel traveled to Michigan last fall to try him and he immediately took to her calm and reassuring nature. Over the winter, the two have bonded deeply and the training progressed to the point that Rachel submitted a tape and was chosen to participate in an Anne Gribbons/Courtney King-Dye clinic. His first day ever off-site was quite stressful for him, but the next day's ride with Courtney went very well. When an opening became available at an upcoming show, the pair found a way to make it happen. Rachel showed Mouse twice last weekend at 2nd Level. In his first class he struggled with a trailer parked at the end of the ring, but by the second day, he was "all business" in both the warm-up and the show ring. Now that they have cleared this first big hurdle, Rachel and Mouse are anxious to do more shows and focus on reproducing in the show ring his quality work at home . What a super opportunity for both horse and rider and a success story that we all believe will have many more chapters! Another update from the outer reaches . . . . Hampton Green Farm and USPRE Super-Fan Marilyn Fahringer has beamed in another photo of her latest converts to encourage all of you to get with the beautiful people and get an HGF or USPRE shirt!!! NOTE: Lendon Gray Clinic Dates: July 6 and 7. Auditors Welcome. Free Admission (no lunch provided). 8 am start.

Considering Mares

There has never been a better time to consider a mare for your next dressage mount. Several celebrity mares have been highly visible and successful at the FEI levels in the past few years in the US, and have been giving their male opponents a lesson in winning dressage. Consider three Diva-mares at the 2008 US Olympic Selection Trials: Brentina (ridden by Debbie McDonald), Rocher (ridden by George Williams) and Naomi (ridden by Lisa Wilcox, now competed by Lars Petersen). This past year several new young mares were debuted at international levels and are bright prospects for Grand Prix, most notably Katherine Bateson's Dea II and Tuny Page's Alina. In Spain, the tradition of training only the PRE stallions for dressage competition is changing. For several years, top dressage riders, such as Rafael Soto, and the country's top breeders have called for the training and competing of mares in dressage. The result has been a change in the Functionality Championship competitions at breed shows around the country, culminating in the National Championship at SICAB. For the first time, mares are included in this under-saddle class, which was limited to stallions in all prior years. At HGF, we have found a certain clientele for mares. When these riders approach us, they already know that they are "mare people" and in the end we are able to provide what they've been looking for. HGF mares are big in size and sporthorse in type, presenting large overstride at the walk and floating expressive trot and canter. 2008 was our top year in mare sales and we look forward to seeing two HGF mares in training and showing in Wellington this winter. We have a fine young group of riding mares that will be available for sale next year. These three year olds will be trained to present in hand and will be started under saddle. For those clients who enjoy the mind and work ethic of a mare, or who are hesitant to make the commitment that a stallion requires, we encourage you to contact us about our mares for sale and the training packages that we offer with each of our sales horses.
