Alvaro was  born in Écija (Sevilla), Spain. He began his riding education working for Juan Manuel Muñoz, with continued training with Jordi Domingo and Claudio Castilla. He has trained  young horses from novice level upwards , and has prepared and showed youngsters in competitions and championships in both Spain and Northern Europe.

Alvaro  runs his own dressage stable along with his partner and wife, Olympic rider Giovanna Pass , Sucandi in Ocala, Florida.
